NEWTON — PCM’s Class 3A seventh-ranked girls’ golf team teed it up with some of the bigger schools at the Newton High Cardinal Invitational May 5 at Westwood Golf Course. The Mustangs held their own.
They finished third behind 4A No. 3 Grinnell and 5A No. 5 Johnston. Grinnell won the team title of the nine-hole event with a 179 and Johnston had a 184.
PCM scored a 184 followed by 5A No. 12 Marshalltown at 211. Chariton was fifth at 212, Newton was sixth at 214 and Bondurant-Farrar was seventh at 263.
PCM junior Madeline Mitchell was fifth with a personal-best 39 in the nine-hole invitational. Grinnell freshman Bella Amador-Lacson shot a 1-over par 36 on Westwood’s back nine as the meet medalist.
Grinnell had three golfers in the top four individual places. Junior Alisha Ford, ranked No. 4 in 4A, placed second with a 38 and 16th-ranked freshman Maddie Schrack was fourth at 42. Johnston’s Sarah Walljasper was third with a 39.
Joining Mtchell for PCM were junior Sabrina Reed with a 46, senior Breanna Maher with a 48 and sophomore Lexi Reed with a 57 for the team score. Junior Ellie Steenhoek finished with a 61 and sophomore Mack Bussan had a 63.
“The course was in great shape and we had a great night for playing golf,” PCM coach Val Edwards said. “It was really exciting to have Madeline and Sabrina get their personal best at this time of the season as we are getting prepared for our regionals in the next two weeks.
“Overall, I think we played pretty well, considering there were several larger schools at this meet.”
PCM plays at 1 p.m. on May 11 at Chariton.
On May 15, the Mustangs compete in the 3A Region 2A tournament at State Center’s Lincoln Valley Golf Course.
In the regional with them are Collins-Maxwell/Baxter, East Marshall, Carroll Kuemper Catholic, North Polk, Roland-Story, Southeast Valley and West Marshall.
Qualifiers from the Region 2A tournament advance to Regional 2 final on May 22 in Menlo.
