Five Mustangs earn all-HOIC baseball recognition

PCM’s Henkenius claims all-district honors

The PCM baseball team climbed the Heart of Iowa Conference standings in 2017.

After winning two more conference games than the year before and finishing two spots higher, the Mustangs were rewarded with five all-conference selections.

Sophomore Reed Worth, junior Noah Henkenius and senior Ethan Thomas all earned second-team honors, while senior Braden Phifer and sophomore Preston Van Wyk were honorable mention selections.

Henkenius also was a second team all-district selection in the Class 2A Central District.

Henkenius was a second-team pitcher. He finished 5-1 in conference play with an earned run average of 1.67. He also recorded two saves, struck out 28 and walked eight in 42 innings.

Henkenius was the Mustangs’ ace pitcher for the first time in his career. He was 6-2 in his nine starts and had two saves on the season.

The Mustang junior finished with an ERA of 1.32, and he struck out 36 while walking 13 in 53 innings pitched.

Worth played nearly every position on the field and earned second-team honors as an outfielder. He batted .358 with 11 runs, 10 RBIs, six walks and four stolen bases. Worth reached base 42 percent of the time and had just one error in the field.

Overall, Worth batted .374 with 24 runs, 24 RBIs, 11 walks and 10 stolen bases.

Thomas earned second-team honors as a utility player. He batted .375 in conference play with seven runs, six RBIs, a home run, four walks and five hit by pitches.

Overall, Thomas hit .301 with 14 runs, 12 RBIs, seven walks and seven hit by pitches.

Phifer batted .298 in his final HOIC season. He finished with eight runs, five RBIs and 10 walks. He reached base 44 percent of the time. Overall, Phifer batted .313 with 10 runs, 15 RBIs and 14 walks.

Van Wyk was the team’s starting center fielder. He batted .286 in HOIC play with an OBP of .344. He finished with 11 runs, three walks and 12 stolen bases.

Overall, Van Wyk hit .344 with 24 runs, 12 RBIs, nine walks and 23 stolen bases.
